How can Amazon seller rank list affect your business development?

The Amazon Seller rank or BSR is a significant sales metric which is purportedly calculated daily and refer to the number of recent sales of the product. It can be found on most product pages if you scroll down to the product details section. 

The product’s sales rank is calculated by the number of recent deals for that specific item and also takes into account other historical sales data, relative to the related products within the same category. However, the rank of one product can vary depending on the market niche because each store represents a different market per se. 

In addition to the historical product data, Amazon takes into account the potential success of the product, pushing it up to Amazon seller rank list. That is why a recently launched product can have a higher ranking than a product released several years ago. So, while the Amazon Seller rank list is a good indicator of the overall product selling, it should not obviously indicate how well a particular product is selling among other similar products. 

Amazon identifies several primary categories in which the item has a high ranking position concerning other products within the same subcategory, and showcases the item’s rank on the product page. 

As I have mentioned before, Amazon takes into account only recent and historical sales to determine a product Best Seller Rank. It does not assume the number of reviews, quality of listing, images, etc. However, it is worth to mention that product doesn’t have an immediate effect on Sales Rank. The recent industry researchers show that there is a lag between increase sales, and in an improvement in a ranking. This fact caused the debates over exactly how many product rankings are calculated hourly. 

How is Amazon Best Seller Rank is calculated?

BSR is a calculation of a product’s number of good deals compared to other products within the same category. 

Generally speaking, the best selling products in a category will have the highest BSR in that category. The second best selling product in a category will subsequently have a BSR of 2 in that class. 

Amazon does not provide clear instructions how to calculate product Best Seller Rank. So we analyzed massive amounts of data to understand how it works. So, here what we get:

  • The Best Seller calculation is based primarily on recent sales;
  • BSR updates for every 12 hours ( it depends on when the payment clears relatively to Amazon updating the market’s BSR);
  • The products with the almost identical Best Seller Rank may have different sales;
  • The recently launched Amazon products with any sales can’t have an Amazon Best Seller Rank;
  • BSR is order dependent and unit independent;
  • Best Seller Rank can be swing by hundreds in the lower ranks within a single sale.

To conclude, I would like to mention that Amazon seller rank list can be both an indicator of how well a product has sold recently and an indicator of how well it has sold over the last few hours.
