Is it true that Amazon com is a new search engine for products?

Sometimes I hear people saying that Amazon com is a new search engine specially designed for products, rather than its default definition as the world's leading retainer in the realm of ecommerce and drop-shipping online business. So, how true is this trendy assumption that Amazon com evolved into search engine for products – even more real than we can think? Luckily, I've got some reasonably convincing statements from the most recent study regarding online marketing technologies. This research is said to have been conducted through four different countries and covering in-store usage at the same time. And below I'm going to show you some interesting results and try to answer the headline question to this story.

More and More people are using Amazon com as search engine for product information. According to the survey, the marketing research involved one thousand consumers from the United States, as well as related shoppers from Germany, the United Kingdom, and France – with about seven hundred respondents per each country (dated 2017 August):

  • Over 70% of online shoppers visit Amazon first and foremost, when it comes to learning more about a certain product (like actual pricing, customer reviews, product details, bullet points of use, etc.) before taking their final decision to make a purchase.
  • Nearly 25% of active users browsing in the sphere of online retailing reconfirmed that they go for Amazon to find out more about the product they need, learn its features, common pricing and any other properties – just as if they were in the real brick-and-mortar store.
  • About 55% of active shoppers on Amazon admitted that they are used to have their initial product search directly over there, regarding practically any product available on sale.
  • Considering that Google still takes about 85% of product-related customer research, the gap can be potentially closing anyway, besides with a rather rapid pace expected.

There is a new side of retail sales uncovered with ecommerce business and drop-shipping product stores in particular. As for Amazon itself, this really crowded world's top popular digital marketplace shows that smartphones are changing the way we buy. It means that more and more active shoppers are promptly adapting to the current progress in mobile-friendly search. And Amazon com with its search engine and product-focused algorithm patterns isn't an exclusion in this rule. It means that all modern concepts or retailing and online promotion inevitably tend to change.

Let's face it – general patterns of consumer behaviour have recently changed to a certain degree. I mean that every common shopper becomes now more likely to form his opinion and build trust pending on the product reviews and the rest of information available online, rather than relying on the live sales staff. And no matter how knowledgeable those employees can actually be – the modern retail industry is still experiencing a fully measurable erosion of its physical locations, spaces and selling points.

David Johnson
Thank you all for being here! I'm David Johnson, the author of the article. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on Amazon SEO and how it compares to Google's search engine. Let's get the discussion started!
Emily Wilson
Hi David, thanks for this informative article! In my experience, optimizing Amazon listings is quite different from Google SEO. While keyword research is important for both, understanding Amazon's A9 algorithm is crucial. It focuses more on conversion rates and relevance for specific search terms. However, Google's search engine is more focused on website credibility and content relevance. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Adam Thompson
Hi Emily, I completely agree with you. Amazon SEO requires a deep understanding of how customers search for products on the platform. It's all about optimizing listings with relevant keywords, quality images, and compelling product descriptions. Google focuses more on website optimization and backlinks. Different strategies are needed for each platform.
Karen Roberts
Absolutely, Adam! Amazon is a product-focused marketplace, while Google is more content-centric. Even though SEO techniques overlap to some extent, it's essential to tailor your approach to each platform's unique requirements. Understanding the differences is key to success. Great article, David!
Michael Lewis
Hey everyone, I've had experience with both Amazon and Google SEO, and I'd say Amazon has its own challenges. Besides optimizing listings, reviews play an important role in Amazon SEO. Positive reviews boost product visibility and organic rankings. Google, on the other hand, focuses more on inbound links and website authority. It's fascinating to see how these platforms differ in their search algorithms.
Sophia Turner
Hi all! I'm relatively new to the world of Amazon SEO, and this article provided great insights. I'm curious about the competition on the platform. Compared to Google, does Amazon have different factors influencing search rankings when multiple sellers offer the same product?
David Johnson
Hello Sophia, great question! When multiple sellers offer the same product on Amazon, competition is indeed a factor. Amazon considers various factors such as pricing, fulfillment method (FBA or FBM), seller ratings, and customer service metrics to determine which seller's listing gets prioritized in search results. The Buy Box also plays a significant role, as it's the default buying option for most customers. It's an interesting aspect to consider when optimizing listings on Amazon.
Emily Wilson
David, could you shed some light on the best practices for optimizing Amazon product listings? Are there specific strategies to improve visibility and increase conversions?
David Johnson
Certainly, Emily! Optimizing product listings on Amazon includes several key elements: 1. Thorough keyword research to include relevant search terms in titles, bullet points, and descriptions. 2. High-quality product images that accurately showcase features and benefits. 3. Optimized product titles with a focus on both keyword inclusion and appealing to customers. 4. Compelling and informative bullet points that highlight the unique selling points. 5. Positive customer reviews and ratings. These are just a few strategies to keep in mind when optimizing Amazon listings. It's a continuous process of refinement as customer preferences and Amazon's algorithm evolve.
Adam Thompson
Thanks, David! That's a great summary of the key aspects of Amazon listing optimization. I'd also emphasize the importance of monitoring and gathering insights from Amazon's backend analytics to refine the listing over time. Split testing different elements can help understand what resonates best with customers.
Sophia Turner
Thank you all for your valuable insights! As someone new to Amazon SEO, I feel more confident in navigating the platform now. David, your article, along with this discussion, has been incredibly helpful. Time to put these tips into action!
David Johnson

Laura Reed
Hey, David! This article really hit the nail on the head. As someone who has worked on SEO for both Amazon and Google, I've been amazed at the differences. Optimizing for Amazon's A9 algorithm has its challenges, but it's rewarding when you see improved rankings and sales. Great job bringing attention to this topic!
David Johnson

Robert Anderson
Hi everyone, I've been doing SEO for e-commerce sites for a while, and this discussion caught my attention. David, your insights on Amazon SEO are spot on. The focus on conversion rates and relevance is a game-changer. Managing expectations of clients when it comes to Amazon is a whole different ballgame compared to Google. Thanks for highlighting these differences!
David Johnson
Thank you for sharing your perspective, Robert! Indeed, managing client expectations is crucial when it comes to Amazon SEO. It's essential to educate sellers about the unique aspects of Amazon's search algorithm and the time it takes to see significant results. Appreciate your input!
Daniel Sanchez
Hey everyone! I've been doing Amazon SEO for quite some time now, and I must say, understanding the A9 algorithm is both challenging and fascinating. It's an ever-evolving landscape that requires constant monitoring and adaptation. Would love to hear your thoughts on any specific strategies or tactics you've found effective.
Michael Lewis
Daniel, I've found that optimizing back-end keywords can make a significant difference in rankings. Although they are not visible to customers, they play a vital role in Amazon's search algorithm. Including relevant, high-volume keywords in these fields can help increase visibility. Additionally, optimizing product titles with long-tail keywords has worked well for me. Anyone else have strategies to share?
Karen Roberts
I completely agree, Michael! Back-end keywords often get overlooked, but they can be powerful. Another effective strategy I've used is leveraging sponsored ads to boost visibility. Sponsored ads can help increase impressions and drive initial sales, which in turn can improve organic rankings. It's a great way to kickstart new product listings.
Emily Wilson
That's true, Karen! Sponsored ads can be a valuable tool if managed effectively. It's crucial to monitor the performance and adjust bids and keywords accordingly. Also, utilizing Amazon's Enhanced Brand Content (EBC) can help showcase products in a more visually appealing manner, driving increased conversions.
David Johnson
Great input, Michael, Karen, and Emily! Leveraging back-end keywords, sponsored ads, and Enhanced Brand Content are indeed effective strategies for Amazon SEO. It's important to continuously test and optimize these elements to stay ahead of the competition. Thanks for sharing your insights!
Sara Turner
Hi everyone! I'm a small business owner who recently started selling on Amazon. This discussion is incredibly useful. Can you provide some guidance on how to get started with Amazon SEO? Any best practices for beginners like myself?

Hello Sara! Welcome to the world of Amazon selling. Getting started with Amazon SEO can be overwhelming, but here are a few essential steps: 1. Research your competitors and identify high-volume, relevant keywords in your niche. 2. Optimize your product titles, bullet points, and descriptions with these keywords. 3. Pay attention to product images and ensure they accurately represent your product. 4. Encourage satisfied customers to leave positive reviews and ratings. These are some initial steps to lay a strong foundation for your Amazon listing. I hope this helps!
Laura Reed

Ryan Mitchell
Hi all, I've been following this discussion with great interest. I've noticed that Amazon's search algorithm seems to prioritize listings with a higher number of sales. Is this accurate, and if so, how can sellers increase their sales velocity to improve their rankings?
Adam Thompson
Ryan, you're correct. Amazon's algorithm does consider sales velocity as a ranking factor. To increase sales velocity, sellers can consider strategies like limited-time promotions or lightning deals to attract customers. Additionally, offering competitive pricing, leveraging social proof through positive reviews, and optimizing advertising campaigns can help boost sales. It's a combination of factors that work together to improve rankings.
Emily Wilson
Exactly, Adam! Providing exceptional customer service and delivering a great product experience can also contribute to positive reviews and repeat customers. Word-of-mouth and organic growth can have a significant impact on sales velocity and, consequently, Amazon rankings.
David Johnson
Well said, Adam and Emily! Increasing sales velocity is crucial for better Amazon rankings. By focusing on customer satisfaction, competitive pricing, and effective promotional strategies, sellers can drive more sales and improve their position in search results. It's all about delivering value to customers consistently.
