SEO for My Site: What Should I Start With?

1. Choose a Good URL

The URL is a critical aspect of your website. Basically, it is your domain name or the address visitors will type to find your site. Just like the sign on a storefront window, the URL is the first thing people see when they visit your site. It is also the first place Google checks to understand what the site is all about before deciding how to rank it.

To make it easier for search engines to pick your URL, it should not contain page ID, special characters or hash bangs. Besides, a good domain should include a business name and a keyword or two that indicate what your business is all about. The right URL will clearly answer webmaster’s central question: “How can I master SEO for my site?”

2. Create Unique Titles and Descriptions for Web Pages

Creating catchy titles and descriptions for pages on your site is critical. They should include short descriptive texts with a few phrases that include keywords.

If you hover your mouse over a tab on your browser, the short phrase that comes up under your mouse is the title of the page. Though it is not always visible, the description plays a key role for search engines. Titles and descriptions are among the basic things search engines use to determine the ranking of your site.

3. Use Anchor Text

When writing content for your site, always consider where you can insert an anchor text. An anchor text is simply a text that users click on to be taken to a different web pages on your website or anywhere on the Internet.

Ideally, anchor texts should urge visitors to navigate the site to find what they are looking for. Also, they should include phrases and keywords related to your business.

4. Add Alt Text to Pictures on Your Site

While Google has become highly efficient in reading your site texts, it is not  good at identifying images yet. To help search engines figure out what the pictures on your site mean, Google refers to alt text — short image descriptions. Use few words to describe what is displayed in the picture or graphic. As a good practice, consider including the name of your business or phrases related to your business in the alt text.

5. Structure the Site with Appropriate Headers

Each page on your site should have a proper structure with custom titles and subtitles. When search engines scan your site, the content is indexed better if it has a hierarchy. The title of your page should be defined as H1. Ideally, H1 should describe the content of your page and include keywords. Also, a single page should not have more than one H1. After H1, you can follow up with H2 and H3. Ultimately, the better you structure the content, the easier it’s for Google to scan and rank your site highly.

The tips stipulated above should answer the question most webmasters face: “Where can I get SEO help for my website?” Be sure, after following all the recommendations listed above you’ll be able to admit: “SEO of my website is doing its job well!”
