What areas should be focused when auditing SEO performance of my business in online search?

That’s the right question, because when it comes to checking your overall performance in SEO with business site, online project of non-commercial targeting or, say, blog pages maintained for marketing purposes – setting the right priorities to focus often proves to be a really daunting task. So, to help you handle SEO audit the right way, below I’m going to quickly run through the main areas of website SEO and business performance in online search, which should be checked before anything else. All that being said, let’s finally delve into greater detail.

Checking Your Website SEO & Business Performance in Online Search

While there are many different approaches to running website SEO audit, you can feel free to choose among a rich variety of online tools and analytical platforms to help you with that. As for me, I personally can recommend you to try one of my featured use-proven SEO helpers, such as Semalt Analyzer (my fave one, mainly due to its competitive research features), Moz’s Open Site Explorer (good one-stop-shop analytical platform), or Ahrefs (reliable web tracking platform tailored for digital marketers). After all, it’s only up to you to decide which one to pick when evaluating SEO of your business site with online toolkit – just make sure that you comply with the basic set of recommendations listed below.

All You Need to Know about Website SEO Audit to Get Started

Timely Schedule

Make sure to run website SEO audit regularly, because the ever-changing world of SEO is constantly changing. And it means that something working pretty well for the moment – can simply lose its power or even become harmful to your rankings. That’s why you should run a deep check-up procedure at least twice a year, but I still believe that handling it quarterly would be much better to keep yourself up-to-date with the latest SEO developments. That’s it.

On-Page SEO Checklist

Before anything else, keep in mind that evaluating the sphere of on-page SEO is arguably the most important part of your comprehensive website audit. To make sure that general SEO performance of your business in online search is sufficiently well-optimized at the on-page level, consider the following main factors that should be taken into account over there:

  • Page Titles & Meta Descriptions – make sure these content-based elements are unique and meet the basic requirements to the maximum allowed character limit for each single web page. That way, take a moment to rethink your meta descriptions – ask yourself whether they are good enough in the capacity of self-sufficient advertisements (i.e., providing a short & concise web page summary about what they can actually offer to your potential clients/buyers once they click on you).
  • Custom URL Structure – make sure to check every single URL for being unique, customized to each relative web page/sit category, rich with your main target keywords, and makes good sense for the user. Consider branding URL when possible, and always have them correctly formatted (i.e., use hyphens instead of dashes/underscores and make sure to meet basic requirements for the maximum character limit too).
  • On-Page Content – the thing is that your on-page content should never be listed as boring plain-text writings, particularly when it comes to setting up a strong sales web copy. So, I recommend having the main titles properly formatted with H1 Headers (note, that there is only one H1 allowed for each single web page), in line with using H2/H3 for the primary Headings, as well as numbered/bulleted lists and bold/italic font formatting to get a user-friendly content structure.

  • Body Content – the most important task here is to eliminate any non-unique shreds of content, which can potentially harm the whole hard-earned ranking progress you achieved with your overall SEO and business website’s online performance so far. To quickly identify any duplicate content issues, I recommend using Copyscape online tool. Upon detecting content duplicates, you must get them either removed, or consider de-indexing the whole web page instead.
  • Interlinking Structure – to make sure you’ve got everything in place with a correct and sufficiently extensive internal link profile, I recommend focusing on these major factors: the optimal average is having about 2-6 internal link count per each web page, use your homepage links to emphasize those pages that need better ranking most of all (nearly the same approach is to their quantity – maximize link count per page to make most out of its ranking potential), be especially careful with “exact-match” keyword-based link text anchor (mainly due to potential issue with duplicate content).
  • Image ALT Tags – remember to have descriptive image file names made up only with lowercase text and separated with hyphens solely. Consider making them embedded with your core target keywords (when applicable), but don’t overdo with that. Make sure every on-page image is defined with a unique ALT Tag. And don’t forget to minimize image file size using compression, or even via a content delivery network (otherwise, CDN) – in case you have a huge number of images that can potentially impact your page loading speed.

Off-Page SEO Checklist

As for me, there is nothing extraordinary over there. That’s why I’m going to outline only two basic aspects of your off-page SEO audit – locating and fixing broken links, as well as analyzing your website’s external link profile (of course, without going crazy with trying to create as many high DA/PR backlinks as you can – simply because you might as well raise a red flag with Google).

  • Broken Links – I recommend using helpful software like Xenu online tool to quickly check all your external links. Once you’ve got a complete report pulling together all broken links – you can either remove them, or consider using redirects pointing the way to another valid URL.
  • External Link Profile – make sure to use one of those three analytical platforms mentioned at the beginning of this post for running an in-depth analysis of your external link profile. Considering that as opposed to on-page SEO audit, your off-page website checkup isn’t that straightforward procedure, here are the main questions to be responded with your external link report: How many unique link-donor domains do you have? What is the average ratio of keyword-based incoming links in your website’s backlink profile? How many genuinely strong and trusted third-party domains do you have? Based on the answers, you will be able to consider taking some corrective actions – but, once again, remember that there is no point in setting too strong focus on your off-page SEO, at least when auditing your site. Just make sure you have everything in place with SEO at the on-page level, with strong content/user-friendly navigation – and natural backlinks will flow in without taking any specific action.

Hi David, thank you for sharing your expertise on SEO audits. What role does content relevance play in improving search engine rankings?
David Johnson
Hi Madison. Content relevance is crucial for improving search engine rankings. Search engines aim to deliver the most relevant content based on users' queries. Optimizing your content to match user intent and providing valuable information on targeted topics greatly increases the chances of ranking higher. During an SEO audit, assessing and improving content relevance involves aligning content with target keywords, addressing user needs, and ensuring comprehensive coverage of relevant topics. Content that meets user expectations and satisfies search intent is more likely to earn higher rankings and attract organic traffic.

Hi David, your article was insightful. Can you explain how SEO audits help websites recover from Google penalties?
David Johnson
Hi Leah. SEO audits are crucial for websites that have been penalized by Google. During an audit, you can identify the root causes of the penalty, whether it's due to thin content, unnatural backlinks, or other violations. By conducting a thorough analysis, you can develop a recovery plan that addresses the specific penalty triggers. This may involve removing toxic backlinks, improving content quality and relevancy, disavowing low-quality links, and implementing proper optimization techniques. SEO audits help recover from penalties by rectifying and optimizing the aspects that led to the penalty in the first place.
