What is the essence of Amazon BSR rank mechanism?

Have you ever wonder how does Amazon tell us what is selling? They use a special ranking system which is called sales rank, or how it is more commonly used Best Seller rank. It is quite an easy system to understand. It serves to compare products within a given category to determine who is the best seller and who is the worst seller in it. The lowest selling rank (1) shows the most well-purchased product. 

Remember that this system compares products from one category. It can’t compare products from the related categories or subcategories. Moreover, you should be aware that products without a rank can’t be sold on Amazon. You can find Amazon BSR rank at the bottom of product description page, under an average customer review section. Here you can check your product rank in the top-level category as well as in the related subcategories. Your primary purpose as a seller to improve your rank in the top-level category. 

Amazon ranks products on a regular basis, continuously updating its Best Seller Rank list. For instance, if a product has just been sold, it may obtain a higher rank on BSR list in comparison to the inventory that has been declining for that moment. However, you should not be confused here. If your products are selling well overall, it does not obviously mean that the item is selling good among other similar things. BSR is a very isolating metric that cannot be compared with any other categories. 

Let us consider an example. For instance, you are selling teddy bears on Amazon along with other sellers. If all the sellers including yourself sell the same amount of teddy bears within the same period, then you most likely won’t notice any changes in the Amazon BSR rank. To stand from the crowd of your competitors, you need to sell at least several copies at a time. 

Factors that impact Amazon BSR rank

The product’s rank is calculated by the number of recent sales for a specific product as well as the historical sale data related to any other products within the same category. Moreover, Amazon takes into account predictive abilities that weight the potential success of a product. This algorithm feature can explain why recently established products may higher ranking than a product released several years ago. 

One thing Amazon BSR rank is not always indicated is how well an item is selling among other similar items. As a rule, Amazon selects several most popular categories in which a certain product has a high ranking position and present the item's rank on the product page. 

There is the number of factors that affect BSR and contribute to organic ranking on Amazon search results page. These factors include total sales history, recent sales velocity, Amazon ads, and repricing. 

Amazon specialties claim that sellers need to pay more attention to push their inventory up on Amazon search results page, than raising a product best seller rank.
