Can I optimize Amazon listing relying on my past optimization experience with Google?

Just like with any other search engine, there is no ultimate guide or step-by-step instruction to optimize Amazon listing best way possible to take the lead over niche competitors once and for all. I mean that the lion’s share of top optimization practices is continuously evolving and changing every year (and even month). If you are new here and think how to optimize your first Amazon listing - then you’re already in the right place. I mean it would be a great time to proceed with creating a strategy.

Of course, the major search engines like Google itself should remain your number one priority. But from the viewpoint of e-commerce and the very concept of drop-shipping business at scale, Amazon is undisputedly the most important trading platform number two. Note, however, that to optimize Amazon listing the right way, you will need just some basic understanding to put up at least your initial strategy and rework it over time.

Doing so, you can have a nice starting point and feel ready to move on - fortunately, Amazon’s search algorithm isn’t that sophisticated as the one used by Google. After all, it doesn’t change as violently and frequently as much more comprehensive ranking algorithm the world’s search giant is betting on. So, below I’m going to show you a list of bullet points to help you optimize Amazon listing with a piece of mind - at least to avoid the most common pitfalls lurking around the site.

Understanding The Basics of Ranking Progress on Amazon

Before delving into the matter and giving you some practical tips to optimize Amazon listing the right way, let me stress it once again - Amazon is very different from any other search engines like Google itself. I mean that some tips & tricks may appear nearly similar. Nevertheless, understanding the fundamental differences and seemingly identical approaches - is exactly what is probably the most challenging over there.

Let’s Make Difference between Amazon and Google Search Engine

  • CTR vs. Satisfaction - user-friendly experience and conversion are the first points which prove absolutely diverse for Amazon and Google. While the search giant was designed to sell ads, the world’s largest marketplace is intended to sell products. In terms of measuring successful performance, it means that Amazon relies on evaluating revenue (otherwise, gross margin per search), amid Google naturally betting on the main web metrics, such as CTR or the average time spent on the page per user visit.
  • Arrangement vs. Prostration - means that while the index on Amazon is entirely structured under specific formats, there is a slight prostration recognized for Google that has been slowly moving towards well-arranged order since 2015.

  • On-Page vs. Off-Page - suggests that you should optimize your Amazon listing revolving only around on-page optimization. For example, running off-page link building over there will have a nearly zero impact on your actual rankings, definitely not like the way it is for Google.
  • Engagement vs. Originality - here we’re entering a definitely delicate junction. The thing is that Amazon simply doesn’t care about original and purely unique content - just because most of your traffic is always pulled from active searchers already shopping out there. If you have some partially matching titles or bullet points with any other listing - don’t worry. On the other hand, however, applying for massive plagiarism or bold copycatting to optimize Amazon listing would be equally unacceptable - just like on Google.

When optimizing listings with variations, it's important to strike a balance between creating separate listings for unique variations and combining variations within a single listing. Firstly, consider creating separate listings if the variations have significant differences in features, functions, or target audience. This allows you to optimize each listing with specific keywords and descriptions. Secondly, you can combine variations into a single listing if the variations only differ in minor attributes like color or size. This consolidates customer reviews and rankings, streamlining the experience for customers. Analyze your specific product characteristics and customer preferences to make the best decision for your listings. I hope this helps!

Andrew, thank you for sharing your expertise on Amazon SEO! I have a query regarding the impact of product pricing on customer perception. Can a higher-priced product still rank well and attract customers?
Andrew Dyhan
Hi Leo! You're welcome. Product pricing does impact customer perception, but a higher-priced product can still rank well and attract customers if it offers value and aligns with customers' expectations. While competitive pricing can attract customers, it's essential to focus on providing unique value through product quality, features, exceptional customer service, and overall shopping experience. Factors such as brand reputation, customer reviews, and differentiation can influence customers' decision-making process, and they may be willing to pay higher prices for superior value. Consider the perceived value and overall package your product offers to customers, align it with your target audience's expectations, and optimize other elements like listing content and customer engagement alongside pricing. I hope this answers your query!
