Can you show me how Google rankings are correlated with my backlinks database?

Through the recent decade, the lion’s share of site owners and webmasters have spawned immense masses of spammy and tricky backlinks - all for the sake of higher ranking positions in Google’s SERPs. As a result, about five years ago the major search engine delivered its first Penguin algorithm update - to start penalizing and de-indexing several PBNs (private blog networks), automated link-generating farms, link wheels (exchanges), as well as raising a red flag with guest blogging for link building purposes. That’s why even a little deviation from Google’s Main Guidelines on irrelevant, spammy or manipulative backlinks can now throw your website or blog in ranking penalty jail.

Google Tells Good Links From Bad Ones

The first thing that shows a tight correlation between your backlinks database and the actual ranking position in Google is that the modern world of the web is literally overwhelmed with links. Myriads of them are generated by online robots. Some are created for bulk sale or intended for individually tailored exchange deals. At the same time, some links can be perfectly tuned to look as natural as possible, the rest of them are those old-school editorial links. So, the main challenge for Google is to examine backlinks database of every website or blog - to understand who is playing a fair game and actually deserves being ranked that high.

Backlinks Database and Real Actions

In fact, when the major search engines like Google itself see a link showing the way to your website or blog, there are only three actual options for each backlink you have. I mean it can be recognized as valid and worth considering in Google’s main search algorithm. At the same time, everything can just remain all the same - and some links can be recognized as entirely null and void - without any impact from the viewpoint of SEO. After all, your website or blog might as well be penalized, given that a part of your links in your backlinks database (or just one separate link) is suspected to be of manipulative or artificial nature.

Cold Facts About Rankings and Backlinks Database

So, there is a certain relationship between the actual position in the SERPs and every website’s backlinks database. But how tight can it be? Here is a list of bullet points to illustrate what external links can do with your rankings at scale.

  • higher positions in the SERPs are correlated with the number of link sources at about 30 on average;
  • this correlation estimate can seem even more impressive, given that smaller correlations aren’t surprising as well - considering that Google can rely on about 200 ranking signals;
  • over 99% of all websites and blogs reviewed by the recent case study appeared to have at least one inbound external link;
  • about 22% of individual pages were found ranked well with no external backlinks at all;
  • having more links can correlate with a higher ranking position, but betting on their number rather than quality doesn’t necessarily mean your website will be shown in the top of the search.

Isabella
Frank, what are your thoughts on using automated link building tools for SEO purposes?

Frank, how can we differentiate between good and bad backlinks? Are there any red flags we should watch out for?
Heather Wilson
What's the ideal ratio of dofollow to nofollow backlinks? Does it impact rankings?
Frank Abagnale
Heather, while there's no strict ideal ratio, having a mix of dofollow and nofollow links is considered natural and can be beneficial. Nofollow links won't pass PageRank, but they can still bring referral traffic and help create a diverse backlink profile.
Alex Turner
Hey, Frank! Should we focus on quantity or quality when building backlinks?
Frank Abagnale
Hey Alex! Always prioritize quality over quantity. It's better to have a few high-quality backlinks than numerous low-quality ones. Focus on earning backlinks from reputable sources that are relevant to your niche.
Michelle Wright
Is it possible to remove or disavow bad backlinks that may be harming our rankings?
Frank Abagnale
Yes, Michelle! If you identify harmful backlinks, disavowing them through Google's Disavow Tool can help prevent them from affecting your search rankings. Regularly monitoring your backlink profile is crucial for maintaining a healthy backlink profile.
Lucas Garcia
Frank, do you recommend using link building services or outsourcing the process?
Frank Abagnale
Hi Lucas! It's best to approach link building organically and authentically. While there are link building services available, they can't always guarantee quality links. Building relationships, creating valuable content, and reaching out to relevant websites yourself often yield better results.
Michael Smith
Thank you for the insights, Frank! I'll keep that in mind while planning my SEO strategy.
Michelle Wright
That's helpful, Frank. I'll make sure to regularly check my backlinks and disavow any harmful ones. Thanks!

Heather Wilson
Thanks, Frank! That helps clarify things for me.

John Adams
Frank, what are your thoughts on link exchange schemes?
Frank Abagnale
Hi John! Link exchange schemes are generally not advisable. It's better to focus on organic, natural backlinks that are earned through relevance, quality content, and providing value. Search engines can detect manipulative link schemes, which can lead to penalties.

Frank, how often should we conduct a backlink audit?
Frank Abagnale
Hi Jeff! It's good practice to conduct regular backlink audits to assess the quality, relevance, and potential harm of your backlinks. Depending on the size of your website and frequency of link building, quarterly or biannual audits can help maintain a healthy backlink profile.

Frank Abagnale

Michael Smith
Frank, should we aim for backlinks from a variety of domains or focus on acquiring multiple backlinks from a few high-authority websites?
Frank Abagnale
Hi Michael! While both strategies have their benefits, a diverse backlink profile that includes a mix of domains and high-authority websites is generally more desirable. It demonstrates credibility and relevance. However, don't solely rely on a single source for backlinks as it may pose a risk if that source becomes unreliable or loses credibility.
Frank Abagnale
Hi David! While there are no one-size-fits-all answers, focusing on authoritative websites, industry-specific directories, and local business directories (if applicable) can be beneficial. Additionally, look for reputable websites where your target audience already engages and try to get backlinks from those sources.
