Could you please tell me about best SEO practices for building URLs?

The uniform resource collector or URL is an address that points to a particular website. It specifies web source location on the Internet. Moreover, it shows how that resource is retrieved leading to its protocol. URLs can be of several types - FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, etc. A standard URL may be no longer than 2083 characters.

URL work principal

URL is a readable text that has been designed to the IP addresses using computer systems to communicate with servers. It identifies the file structure of the particular website. A URL consists of the protocol, domain name, and a path. The path determines which sub folder will be accessed.

The protocol indicates how a web browser retrieves information about a web source. There are two primary standards: "https://" (S for secure) and "https://." Other common protocols include "ftp." It uses to handle file transfers which open the default email apps.

A Top Level Domain can be compared to website category. You must be familiar with .com, right? Well, there are other TLDs like .edu, .org, .give and so forth.

URL as the best SEO practices

URLs helps users find the relevant information and easily share it with others. It serves as a website preview and tells users what they should expect after clicking on the web source.

Here is an example of semantically-accurate URL (https://www.Facebook.com/login/user8gthi89). Don't mind the technical jargon. A semantically correct URL only describes its destination.

In the above example, even if a title tag of the page were to be hidden then you'd still get a clue that you can use a link to log in a user account. By the way, Google uses snippets to display links in search results for mobile devices.

  • ranking factor

URLs play a significant role in determining how a website is ranked by search engines. URL gives weight to the site's authority. In fact, SEO techniques involve using the primary keyword in the URL. However, you should not make the URL too long or incomprehensible.

  • links

A well-drafted URL can also serve as its anchor text when it is copied then pasted as a link in blogs, forums and on social media. It benefits you in two ways:

Some websites such as Facebook may leave links unformatted. It implies that any incomprehensible URL will look like ancient text. As a result, one loses traffic.

Pay attention to the following example “https://doreview.com/revieweos6d”. The keywords “do review,” “eos” and “6d” increase website chances to rank higher. It's one of the best SEO practices you may easily implement.

Currently, the Google’s best SEO practices for URLs are the following:

  • keep URLs simple, relevant, accurate and compelling;

  • make them concise and definitive;

  • avoid spaces, underscores and other special characters;

  • avoid URL parameters.

Thank you all for joining this discussion on best SEO practices for building URLs. I'm excited to hear your thoughts and opinions!
Natalie
When building URLs for SEO, it's important to keep them concise and descriptive. Including relevant keywords can also help improve search engine rankings.
Mark
I agree with Natalie. Short and relevant URLs tend to perform better in terms of SEO. It's also a good practice to use hyphens (-) instead of underscores (_) for word separation.
Sarah
Should we include the target keyword in the URL structure?
Olya Pyrozhenko
Hi Sarah! Including the target keyword in the URL can be beneficial for SEO as it provides further context to search engines. However, make sure it fits naturally and doesn't appear as keyword stuffing.
John
Is it better to use subdirectories or subdomains for organizing content within a website?
Olya Pyrozhenko
Hi John! Both subdirectories and subdomains can be used effectively for organizing content. However, subdirectories are generally preferred as they help consolidate domain authority and keep the main domain stronger overall.
Ryan
What about capitalization in URLs? Does it matter for SEO?
Olya Pyrozhenko
Hi Ryan! Capitalization in URLs doesn't directly impact SEO as search engines are case-insensitive. However, it's best to keep URLs in lowercase for consistency and user-friendliness.
