What should be kept in mind while building relevant backlinks for top performing SEO?

No need to say that building relevant backlinks for SEO the right way has some hidden things to be kept in mind by every novice webmaster and site owner. That’s true, mainly because the whole process of creating purely relevant backlinks that will never hurt your rankings has a lot of steps and sides. And too often keeping away from messing things up proves to be much more challenging than most of us can think. That’s why below I’m going to show you some of the most frequent pitfalls about quality link building. Know what should be avoided at all cost - or at least fixed promptly right upon you detect them on your website or blog. I mean any of the following mistakes can easily turn even your best relevant backlinks into a useless piece of junk - nearly in no time. What’s more - when it comes to extremes, just a single “toxic” link can irreversibly impact your long-lasting SEO performance in a longer run.

The Obvious Mistakes

You’d better have at least a brief look over here. Don’t skip these obvious mistakes - just ask yourself if you really have everything in place, and your website or blog will never be linked with:

  • any websites or blogs with a bad or even suspicious reputation (not to mention those already banned on Google’s index);
  • irrelevant niche sources, or any places having any relations with the most spammy industries, such as adultery, gambling, or pharmacy;
  • third-party sources looking just like the standard websites, blogs, or forums but having tons of seemingly relevant backlinks in their own link profiles, or offering them for sale and/or exchange.

Everything should be self-explanatory out there, as applying for any of just mentioned options you will be most likely to cause damage to your current search rankings, rather than enjoy any measurable improvement for your strategy in SEO at scale. Once we made even the obvious things flawlessly clear, below, I’m going to point out a couple of probably most dangerous yet still often underestimated mistakes. When it comes to building relevant backlinks, here is what usually kills the game:

  • Wrong Anchor Text

Never pick link text anchors at random and don’t use them in a shot-in-the-dark manner. I strongly recommend delving deeper into the subject, because only solid commercial anchors that look naturally can really boost your conversions. The ugly truth is that a completely wrong or even in-part faulty text anchor can turn you perfectly fine and relevant backlinks in the actual reason of ranking drop, or even manual penalty.

  • Incorrect Use Of DoFollow/NoFollow Attributes

Just as the previous one, this matter will need a more in-depth study. Of course, only DoFollow backlinks can actually meet the needs of SEO at scale. At the same time - if you manipulate or just slightly overdo with them - everything will be most likely to end up with equally severe consequences.

  • Adversely Steep Expansion

Let’s face it - even if you have a nice lucky win with detecting a lot of good and reliable sources worth building links with, you should never rush out - just to use all new opportunities within several hours or for overnight. And any sharp increase - either in link quality or quantity - is definitely not the thing to be praised with. Remember, building relevant links that would serve you permanently with their best performance in SEO - is all about the balance. Never hesitate to ask yourself once again: Does everything look fully naturally? Have you spent enough time picking the right sources? Are you sure everything about backlinks is in place and done only for clear purpose?

David Johnson
Absolutely, Lisa! Quality should always be the priority. It's important to focus on building a natural and relevant backlink profile to maintain long-term SEO success.
Michael Anderson
I've seen many websites making the mistake of buying or trading backlinks. They may get a short-term boost, but it eventually backfires. It's an unethical practice that can lead to penalties from search engines.
David Johnson
You're absolutely right, Michael. Buying or trading backlinks is a risky approach that can harm your website's credibility in the long run. It's always better to focus on organic and natural link building strategies.
Michelle Adams

David Johnson
Hi Michelle! I'm glad you found the article informative. When it comes to anchor text, it's important to keep it natural and diverse. Avoid using exact match anchor text excessively as it can raise red flags with search engines. Instead, focus on using variations of your target keywords and even non-keyword anchors that provide context to the linked page.
Emily Roberts
One mistake I often see is over-optimized anchor text. It looks spammy and can negatively impact search engine rankings. Finding the right balance is key!
David Johnson
Absolutely, Emily! Over-optimizing anchor text is a common mistake. It's crucial to maintain a natural link profile. Remember, Google values relevance and user experience, so always keep that in mind when optimizing anchor text.
Benjamin Thompson
David, do you have any tips for obtaining high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites in the same niche?
David Johnson
Hi Benjamin! Building relationships with authoritative websites in your niche is key to obtaining high-quality backlinks. Consider reaching out to them with personalized outreach, offering valuable content collaborations or guest posting opportunities. It requires effort, but the results can be very rewarding.
Patrick Phillips
Thanks for the insights, David! I'm curious about your thoughts on the use of social media for link building. How effective is it in today's digital landscape?
David Johnson
Great question, Patrick! Social media can be a powerful tool for link building. By sharing valuable content on social platforms, you can attract attention and potentially earn backlinks from others. It's important to engage with your audience and build a strong online presence across social channels to maximize the benefits.
Sarah Wilson
I'm new to link building. Are there any tools or software you recommend to help streamline the process?
David Johnson
Hi Sarah! There are several excellent tools and software available to streamline link building tasks. Some popular ones include SEMrush, Moz, and Ahrefs. These tools offer features like backlink analysis, competitor research, and outreach management. However, always remember that link building also requires manual effort and personalization to achieve the best results.
Jonathan Lee
I've encountered websites that use hidden or invisible text for link building. It's clearly against search engine guidelines. Such tactics should definitely be avoided!
David Johnson
You're absolutely right, Jonathan! Using hidden or invisible text for link building is a black hat SEO technique that violates search engine guidelines. It can result in severe penalties and damage to your website's reputation. Always remember to stay ethical and focus on legitimate link building strategies.
Rachel Turner
David, could you please share some tips on effectively analyzing a website's backlink profile?
David Johnson
Of course, Rachel! When analyzing a website's backlink profile, you can use tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Moz to get insights on the number of backlinks, their quality, and the referring domains. Look for patterns and discrepancies to identify potentially harmful links or areas for improvement. Remember to focus on quality rather than just quantity and consider the relevance of the linking sites.
Alex Turner
David, what steps can we take to recover from a manual penalty due to poor link building practices?
David Johnson
Hi Alex! If your website receives a manual penalty due to poor link building practices, the first step is to identify and remove the problematic links. Reach out to webmasters to request link removal or disavow them using Google's Disavow Tool. Once you've taken appropriate actions, submit a reconsideration request to Google, detailing the steps you've taken to rectify the issue. It may take time, but following a proactive approach and demonstrating your commitment to quality can help in the penalty recovery process.
Laura Davis
Hey David, I really enjoyed your article! Would you recommend pursuing link building through guest blogging?
David Johnson
Hi Laura! I'm glad you enjoyed the article. Guest blogging can be a great way to build high-quality backlinks and establish yourself as an authority. Look for reputable websites in your niche that accept guest posts and provide valuable content that aligns with their audience's interests. However, always prioritize relevance and quality over quantity when pursuing guest blogging opportunities.
Daniel Green
I consider building relationships with influencers in your industry as an effective way of link building. They can provide valuable exposure and potential backlinks. What are your thoughts on this, David?
David Johnson
Great point, Daniel! Building relationships with industry influencers is indeed an effective strategy. Engage with them on social media, share their content, and provide valuable input. By nurturing these relationships, you increase the chances of earning backlinks from them or receiving exposure to their audience, which can lead to natural link building opportunities.
Amy Collins
Hi David! I noticed that some websites employ reciprocal link building, where they exchange links with other websites. Is this still a valid strategy?
David Johnson
Hi Amy! Reciprocal link building, where two websites mutually agree to exchange links, was once a common practice. However, its effectiveness has diminished over time. Search engines now prioritize one-way, natural backlinks over reciprocal ones. Instead of focusing on reciprocal links, it's better to invest time and effort in earning high-quality backlinks through valuable content and building genuine relationships.
Gabriel White
David, I've heard about broken link building. How does it work, and is it still a viable approach?
David Johnson
Hi Gabriel! Broken link building involves finding broken links on other websites and reaching out to the webmasters, suggesting your own relevant content as a replacement. It can be a viable approach to gain backlinks from authority sites. However, it requires thorough research and personalized outreach to be successful. It's important to offer value to the webmasters by providing high-quality content that fills the gap left by the broken link.
Sophia Adams
Hey David, I appreciate your emphasis on the importance of relevance in backlinks. Do you have any tips for finding websites in the same niche for link building purposes?
David Johnson
Hi Sophia! Finding relevant websites for link building can be done through various methods. Start by conducting thorough research within your niche using search engines, online directories, social media, and industry forums. Look for websites that cover similar topics or have complementary content. Additionally, competitor analysis can reveal potential link building opportunities. Remember to prioritize websites with good reputations and high domain authority.
Liam Robinson
Hello David! Thanks for the informative article. I've encountered the practice of link farming, where websites create multiple links to artificially boost rankings. It doesn't seem ethical. Your views?
David Johnson
Hi Liam! Link farming, where websites generate numerous low-quality links, is indeed an unethical practice and a violation of search engine guidelines. Search engines are smart enough to detect such tactics, and they can lead to severe penalties. Focusing on natural and organic link building methods is the way to go for sustainable SEO success.
Charles Bennett
I've noticed websites stuffing keywords into anchor text to manipulate search rankings. It looks spammy and untrustworthy. What's your take on this, David?
David Johnson
You're absolutely right, Charles! Keyword stuffing in anchor text is a manipulative tactic that not only looks spammy but also raises red flags with search engines. It's important to maintain a balanced and natural anchor text distribution that provides relevant context to users and search engines. Focus on providing value through informative anchor text while avoiding excessive use of target keywords.
Olivia Martin
Hi David! One mistake I've seen is websites neglecting the importance of internal linking. How crucial is it, and do you have any tips for effective internal linking?
David Johnson
Hi Olivia! Internal linking is indeed crucial for both user experience and SEO. It helps search engines understand the structure and hierarchy of your website while providing users with relevant navigation. Start by conducting a comprehensive internal link audit to identify opportunities for improvement. Use descriptive anchor text, ensure the chosen internal links are relevant and add value to the user. Also, make sure to distribute internal links throughout your website to enhance accessibility and crawlability.
Lucas Martinez
David, thanks for the insightful article! Can you explain the concept of 'nofollow' and 'dofollow' links? How do they impact SEO?
David Johnson
You're welcome, Lucas! 'Nofollow' and 'dofollow' are link attributes that inform search engines how to treat the linked page. 'Nofollow' links are intended to be ignored by search engine crawlers, so they don't pass on authority or contribute to rankings. 'Dofollow' links, on the other hand, are the standard links that allow search engines to follow them and pass on authority. From an SEO perspective, a mix of both types can provide a natural link profile. However, keep in mind that 'nofollow' links still have value in terms of referral traffic and exposure.
Harper Lewis
Hi David! I've heard about link building through resource pages. Could you elaborate on this strategy and its effectiveness?
David Johnson
Hi Harper! Link building through resource pages can be an effective strategy. Resource pages are curated lists of helpful links or tools within a particular niche. Start by identifying relevant resource pages in your industry using search engines and related websites. Reach out to the webmasters, showcasing your valuable content or resources that would be useful for their audience. If your content meets their standards, they may include your link, providing a quality backlink and potential referral traffic.
Henry Taylor
Thanks for the article, David! Can you suggest any effective ways to track the impact of our link building efforts?
David Johnson
You're welcome, Henry! Tracking the impact of link building efforts is crucial to evaluate their effectiveness. Firstly, utilize tools like Google Analytics to monitor organic traffic and referral traffic to your website. This will give you insights into the volume and quality of traffic coming from your backlinks. Additionally, backlink analysis tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs can provide data on new backlinks, their quality, and changes in your overall backlink profile. Regular monitoring, coupled with relevant SEO metrics, will give you a solid understanding of the impact of your link building strategies.
Ava Walker
Hi David! I've seen websites using link wheels for link building purposes. Are they effective, or should they be avoided?
David Johnson
Hi Ava! Link wheels, where websites create a series of interlinked pages to manipulate search rankings, are considered a black hat SEO technique and should be avoided. Search engines are well-aware of this tactic and take measures to identify and penalize such practices. Instead, focus on building natural, high-quality backlinks that provide value to both users and search engines.
Victoria Carter
David, could you please elaborate on the concept of anchor text diversity? How important is it?
David Johnson
Certainly, Victoria! Anchor text diversity refers to the variations of anchor text used in your backlinks. Having a diverse anchor text profile helps avoid over-optimization and signals search engines about the naturalness of your link profile. Aim for a mix of exact match, partial match, branded, and non-keyword anchors that provide context to the linked page. A natural anchor text distribution is essential for a healthy and organic link profile.
Leo Hughes
Hi David! What are your thoughts on using press releases for link building? Do they still hold value in today's SEO landscape?
David Johnson
Hi Leo! Press releases can still hold value in terms of brand exposure and driving referral traffic. However, from an SEO perspective, the impact of press release links on rankings has diminished. Search engines now focus more on natural and earned backlinks rather than those obtained through press releases. If you choose to use press releases, ensure that the focus is on newsworthy and valuable content that genuinely attracts attention and potential backlinks.
Jackson Wood
Hey David, what are your thoughts on using link building software for automated backlink generation?
David Johnson
Hi Jackson! While there are various link building software available in the market, it's important to exercise caution. Automated backlink generation can be tempting, but it often leads to low-quality and spammy links that may harm your website's credibility. Link building requires thoughtful planning, personalization, and quality content. Instead of relying solely on software, take a manual approach to build genuine relationships, create valuable content, and prioritize quality over quantity.
Ella Murphy
David, can you please explain how internal linking impacts SEO?
David Johnson
Hi Ella! Internal linking plays a crucial role in SEO. It helps search engines understand the structure and hierarchy of your website, making it easier to index and crawl your pages. By strategically interlinking relevant pages within your website, you distribute authority and improve the overall user experience. Additionally, internal links provide additional paths for users to discover content, reducing bounce rates and increasing time spent on your site. When done well, internal linking can enhance your website's SEO performance.
Sebastian Edwards
Hello David! How important is it to regularly monitor our website's backlink profile?
David Johnson
Hi Sebastian! Regular monitoring of your website's backlink profile is highly important. It helps you identify any low-quality or toxic links that might harm your SEO efforts. By conducting periodic audits, you can proactively disavow or remove harmful links, ensuring a healthy link profile. Additionally, monitoring new backlinks allows you to understand the impact of your link building strategies and make necessary adjustments to improve results.
Valentina Scott
Thanks for the insights, David! Could you suggest some effective strategies for generating backlinks from .edu and .gov domains?
David Johnson
You're welcome, Valentina! Generating backlinks from .edu and .gov domains can be valuable due to their authority and credibility. Start by engaging with these institutions through content collaborations, guest blogging, or resource contributions. Offer valuable insights, research, or data that can benefit their audience. Building genuine relationships with universities, educational institutes, and government organizations can lead to natural backlink opportunities over time.
Carlos Thompson
Hi David! Are there any specific on-page optimization techniques we can implement to support our link building efforts?
David Johnson
Hi Carlos! On-page optimization plays a crucial role in supporting link building efforts. Make sure your website's content is high-quality, relevant, and valuable to users. Optimize your pages with relevant keywords in titles, headings, and meta tags while ensuring the content flows naturally. Create internal links to relevant pages within your website to establish connections and distribute authority. User-friendly navigation and fast loading speed are also crucial factors. Providing a strong on-page foundation complements your link building strategies and boosts their overall impact.
Julia Thompson
David, I've heard about link building through infographics. Is it effective, and what are the best practices?
David Johnson
Hi Julia! Link building through infographics can be an effective strategy. Create informative and visually appealing infographics related to your niche. Embed them on your website and offer an HTML code for others to share on their websites, providing a backlink to you. Additionally, you can reach out to relevant websites or bloggers who may be interested in sharing your infographic with their audience. Remember to include relevant alt text and a descriptive caption for the infographic to enhance its accessibility and shareability.
Adrian Baker
Hey David! What's the significance of domain authority in link building, and how can we improve it?
David Johnson
Hi Adrian! Domain authority is an important metric that search engines consider while evaluating the credibility and quality of a website. It plays a role in determining the impact of backlinks. To improve domain authority, focus on creating high-quality and valuable content that naturally earns backlinks from authoritative and relevant websites. Enhance your website's overall user experience, ensure it is technically optimized, and engage in strategic link building efforts. Over time, these factors contribute to improving your domain authority.
Emma Hill
Hi David! I've seen some websites overdo guest blogging by submitting low-quality content to multiple sites. Does this approach negatively impact SEO?
David Johnson
Hi Emma! Overdoing guest blogging with low-quality content that's solely meant for link building can indeed have a negative impact on SEO. Search engines value relevance, quality, and user experience. If your content doesn't provide value to the readers, it can lead to penalties or a damaged reputation. Focus on producing high-quality content that is genuinely helpful and informative for the target audience, ensuring it aligns with the website you're submitting it to.
Harry Mitchell
David, many websites have a 'Resources' or 'Helpful Links' page. Do these pages still hold value for link building purposes?
David Johnson
Hi Harry! 'Resources' or 'Helpful Links' pages on websites can still hold value for link building. These pages often provide valuable resources to the users and can attract relevant backlinks. However, it's important to reach out to webmasters and present your content or resources as genuinely helpful and applicable to their target audience. Seek opportunities where your content aligns with their page's theme and can genuinely complement their existing resources.
Sarah Collins
David, should we prioritize building backlinks from websites that have a higher domain authority than ours?
David Johnson
Hi Sarah! While obtaining backlinks from websites with a higher domain authority can be beneficial, it's not the only factor to consider. Focus on building a diverse and natural link profile that includes a mix of authoritative, relevant, and niche-specific websites. Prioritize backlinks that come from sources that align with your content and target audience. Quality and relevance should be the primary criteria when evaluating potential link building opportunities.
Lucy Robinson
Hi David! I've heard about link building through testimonials or reviews. Can you share some insights on this strategy?
David Johnson
Hi Lucy! Link building through testimonials or reviews can be a great way to earn backlinks and improve brand reputation. Reach out to businesses or websites that you've used or had a positive experience with. Offer them a testimonial or review highlighting the benefits or results you've achieved. In return, they may include a backlink to your website along with the testimonial. It's mutually beneficial and provides a valuable backlink from a trusted and related source.
Ethan Wright
David, how long does it usually take to see the impact of link building efforts on search engine rankings?
David Johnson
Hi Ethan! The time it takes to see the impact of link building efforts on search engine rankings can vary. It depends on several factors, such as the competitiveness of the keywords, the authority of the linking websites, the relevancy of the backlinks, and the frequency and quality of your link building activities. Generally, it takes time for search engines to crawl and evaluate new backlinks. Patience and a continuous effort in implementing link building strategies are key to achieving impactful results.
Sophie Foster
Hi David! Are there any risks associated with actively reaching out for backlinks, such as getting penalized by search engines?
David Johnson
Hi Sophie! Actively reaching out for backlinks is a legitimate approach, as long as it's done ethically and follows best practices. It becomes risky when there's excessive or manipulative behavior involved, such as spamming, link schemes, or unnatural link exchanges. To mitigate risks, focus on creating valuable content, building genuine relationships, and pursuing relevant backlinks. Always prioritize quality and relevance while adhering to search engine guidelines.
Samuel Wright
David, what's the best way to approach bloggers or influencers for potential backlink opportunities?
David Johnson
Hi Samuel! When approaching bloggers or influencers for potential backlink opportunities, personalization and value are key. Start by researching and understanding their target audience, content niche, and recent posts. Reach out with a personalized email explaining why you believe your content or resource would be valuable to their audience. Offer to provide unique insights, expert opinions, or exclusive data that complements their existing content. Building genuine relationships and adding value to their audience increases the chances of earning valuable backlinks.
Ruby Bennett
David, what are some common misconceptions or myths about link building that should be clarified?
David Johnson
Hi Ruby! One common misconception is that the quantity of backlinks is more important than quality. In reality, search engines prioritize the quality, relevance, and naturalness of backlinks. It's better to have a few high-quality and relevant backlinks than numerous low-quality ones. Another misconception is that all links should be 'dofollow' to benefit rankings. While 'dofollow' links pass authority, 'nofollow' links have their own value in terms of referral traffic and exposure. Balancing both types of links is important for a natural link profile.
Stella Davis
Hi David! I've noticed some websites buying expired domains solely for their backlink profiles. Is this a valid strategy, and what are the risks involved?
David Johnson
Hi Stella! Buying expired domains solely for their backlink profiles can be a strategy to acquire high-quality backlinks. However, it comes with risks. Some expired domains may have a history of spammy or manipulative link building practices, which can harm your website's credibility. It's crucial to thoroughly research the domain's history, backlink profile, and ensure it aligns with your website's niche and quality standards. Due diligence is essential in identifying potentially valuable expired domains.
Isabella Adams
David, what is your opinion on participating in forums or online communities for link building purposes?
David Johnson
Hi Isabella! Forums and online communities can offer valuable opportunities for link building when approached tactfully. Engage genuinely in relevant discussions, provide helpful insights, and establish yourself as an authoritative contributor. If permitted by the forum guidelines, include a link to your website in your signature or when relevant to the discussion. However, the primary focus should always be on adding value to the community and nurturing relationships before expecting any link building benefits.
Oscar Turner
David, is there a specific threshold for the number of backlinks we should aim for, or does it solely depend on quality?
David Johnson
Hi Oscar! The number of backlinks you should aim for depends on various factors, including the competitiveness of your industry, your website's authority, and the quality of the backlinks. There's no specific threshold that applies universally. Instead, focus on earning high-quality, relevant, and natural backlinks. Building a strong link profile that contains a mix of authoritative sources will have a more significant impact than solely aiming for a numerical target.
Lilian Mitchell
David, what role does content quality play in link building, and how can we ensure our content is link-worthy?
David Johnson
Hi Lilian! Content quality plays a crucial role in link building. To ensure your content is link-worthy, focus on in-depth research, unique insights, and valuable information that fills a gap in your niche. Make it visually appealing, easy to read, and shareable. Incorporate relevant visuals, statistics, and actionable advice. By creating content that provides genuine value to your target audience, you increase the chances of attracting natural backlinks from other websites.
Aaron Scott
Hey David! Could you please share some tips for effective email outreach when requesting backlinks?
David Johnson

Start by researching the website or contact you're reaching out to, and tailor your email to their specific context and needs. Personalization, understanding their perspective, and emphasizing mutual benefit increases the chances of obtaining positive responses and valuable backlinks.
Georgia Baker

David Johnson

By prioritizing the user experience throughout the link building process, you enhance the effectiveness and credibility of your backlinks.
