What should I prioritize between web design and search engine optimization?

Google philosophy states as follows, “you should think over user’s good experience with your site, prosperity will follow.” However, a lot of website owners and search engine optimization specialists do not take this statement seriously, creating a web page designed primarily for search bots, not for average users. By doing so, they lower their rankings and raise bounce rate.

Nowadays, Google states that developing for user experience is much more valuable than designing just for search engine optimization. The notions of SEO and enjoyable user experience become complementary and interrelated, and quality websites that designed for users rather than for search engines result in website SEO improvement and higher rankings. Experienced web designers take into account both aspects SEO and UX to make a website efficient for both search engines and users. In this article, I will enumerate some UX essentials which can affect website rankings and improve your site SEO.

Web design and search engine optimization essentials

  • Mobile responsive design

In the 2015 Google made a rankings update making a mobile-friendliness of websites as the essential ranking factor. According to this update, all sites should be legible and functional on all mobile devices and tablets. So nowadays if you would like to rank on the first Google page, you should obviously design your site not only for desktops but also for mobile screens.

There are three favorite ways to design for mobile devices - website responsive design, dynamic serving and separate URLs. However, the responsive design is the best way to enhance website SEO. With the responsive design, you give your potential customers an opportunity to use the same version of your site on their mobile devices. Other ways of website mobile-friendliness improvement are less useful as they separate mobile website version from the main desktop version and make mobile version rank for itself. Search engine optimization and user perfect experience are blending when it comes to mobile sites. Make sure your mobile version design enables users to navigate your site easily. So to improve their mobile experience with your site, leave a space between buttons and avoid using too large or too tiny element as well as pop-ups.

  • Infinite scroll should be used wisely

You can improve your website visitors experience by implementing infinite scrolls in which more content continues to load as the user scroll to the bottom of the web page. However, in this case, Google bots can not imitate user behavior, and the content which is visible for users remains unparsed by search bots. If you think your site is required such design feature as an infinite scroll, create a paginated series alongside many scrolls. It will help you to improve user experience by letting them easily find what they need.

search engine optimization

  • Avoid using click-to-expand

Click-to-expand or tabbed content also make sense when it comes to a combination of search engine optimization and user experience. Most designers tend to use active tabs users may click on for more content. This technique is widely used on blogs and e-commerce sites which are overloaded by information. As well as with infinite scroll, click-to-expand design element may not be acknowledged by Google. There is a belief that Google bots cannot parse this kind of hidden content. So, you can implement click-to-expand element if you use the practice sparingly. Click-to-expand content can contribute to your minimalistic web design, but appealing to user experience, in this case, could hurt your site rankings.

Thank you all for reading my article on Web Dev And SEO - What Should You Prioritize? I'm excited to hear your thoughts and opinions on this topic.
Kevin Parker
Great article, Nik! I think both web development and SEO are important for a successful online presence. It's about finding the right balance between a well-designed and functional website and optimizing it for search engines.
Nancy Thompson
I couldn't agree more, Kevin. You need a solid website foundation with excellent user experience, but without SEO, it's like having a beautiful house in the middle of nowhere. SEO helps people find and discover your website.
Nik Chaykovskiy
You're absolutely right, Nancy. SEO plays a crucial role in driving organic traffic to your website. It's the bridge that connects your well-crafted website to the audience searching for your products or services.
Laura Ramirez
I think it depends on the situation. If you're just starting out and don't have a lot of resources, focusing on web development might be more important. Once your website is up and running, you can then shift your focus towards SEO.
Nik Chaykovskiy
That's a valid point, Laura. It's important to prioritize based on your specific circumstances. Getting your website up and running smoothly should be the initial goal, but keeping SEO in mind for future optimization is crucial.
Samuel Johnson
In my opinion, SEO should always be a top priority. No matter how well-designed your website is, it won't generate desired results if it doesn't rank well in search engine results. A well-optimized website can bring targeted organic traffic.
Nik Chaykovskiy
I understand your perspective, Samuel. SEO is indeed crucial for visibility and attracting targeted traffic. However, neglecting web development can lead to poor user experience, which also impacts the website's performance in attracting and converting visitors.
Mark Thompson
I think it ultimately depends on your goals. If your primary objective is to attract organic traffic, then SEO should be a priority. But if you have a unique and complex website that requires advanced functionality, web development might take precedence.

You're right, Mark. Goals and priorities play a vital role in deciding where to allocate resources. The key is finding a balance that ensures a user-friendly website and optimized presence to attract traffic.

Nik Chaykovskiy
Excellent point, Sophia. User experience should always be a primary consideration. A website that is visually appealing, easy to navigate, and provides value will likely have a positive impact on SEO as well.

I believe SEO is more important these days. With so much competition online, having your website optimized for search engines can give you an edge and help you stand out from the crowd.
Nik Chaykovskiy
Appreciate your input, Roger. With increasing online competition, SEO undoubtedly plays a significant role in distinguishing your website and gaining visibility. Yet, it should be complemented by a well-designed and user-friendly website.

Exactly, Maria. Prioritizing both web development and SEO can lead to a synergistic effect where a well-designed website supports SEO efforts, and effective SEO enhances the overall user experience.

I've seen websites with fantastic SEO but poor design, and vice versa. It's important to strike a balance between the two to create a successful online presence.
Nik Chaykovskiy
You're absolutely right, George. A balance between web development and SEO is key. Exceptional design and seamless functionality, combined with effective SEO practices, can make a website truly stand out.

Nik Chaykovskiy
Thanks for sharing your experience, Oliver. Building a strong website foundation through web development before fine-tuning it with SEO strategies can indeed be an effective approach for long-term success.
Stephanie Roberts

Nik Chaykovskiy
Absolutely, Stephanie. Both web development and SEO are iterative processes where ongoing attention and improvements are needed. It's a journey of continuous optimization.
Robert Thompson
Web development is like the backbone of a website, whereas SEO is like the fuel that drives it forward. Both are essential for success.

Great analogy, Robert. Web development provides the structure and functionality, and SEO fuels its visibility and growth. Together, they form the backbone of a successful online presence.

Nik Chaykovskiy
Thanks for sharing your perspective, Peter. A strong foundation through web development is undoubtedly crucial. SEO then serves as an opportunity to maximize the website's reach and impact.
Mike Adams
I believe SEO should always come first. Without visibility, even the best website may go unnoticed. SEO helps improve search rankings and ensures your website appears in relevant searches.
Nik Chaykovskiy
I understand your point, Mike. SEO does play a significant role in making a website discoverable. However, investing in web development as well ensures a seamless user experience once visitors land on your site.
Sophie Williams

Nik Chaykovskiy
Absolutely, Sophie. Striking a balance between web development and SEO is key to creating a holistic online presence that delivers a great user experience and attracts organic traffic.
David Turner

Vanessa Thompson
A well-designed website may attract visitors, but without SEO, it won't reach its full potential. I believe both should be approached simultaneously.

Nik Chaykovskiy
I appreciate your perspective, Laura. A strong focus on web development ensures an excellent user experience, which is crucial for attracting and retaining visitors. SEO can then be optimized to amplify the website's reach.
Daniel Harris

Nik Chaykovskiy
Well said, Daniel. By valuing both engaging web development and effective SEO, a website can achieve its full potential and deliver a remarkable online experience.
